Join ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú President Wendy Rodgers for her casual "coffee chat" this Thursday, October 9 in The Fox and Crow at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre while CBC's Island Morning and Radio-Canada's Le réveil are broadcast live! The two radio shows will air simultaneously, beginning at 6:00 am, with each featuring different guests from ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú on a variety of topics, in addition to regular show elements.

The Island Lecture Series and the Vinland Society present a talk by Dr. Helen Kristmanson, "Memories of Osland: a historical Icelandic village in northern British Columbia." The Island Lecture Series will be held on October 21, 2025, at 7 pm, in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building, Room 201.
Hidden along the Skeena River's sylvan shores are the remains of a small historical village known as Osland. Settled by Icelanders who migrated west between 1870 and 1914, Osland was part of a thriving network of communities that formed an economic hub supported by the fishery and canneries. Today, though a few families preserve their ancestral houses at Osland, these historical buildings are interspersed with the fading remains of those long gone. This presentation draws on a range of primary sources, including memories gathered about thirty years ago from Osland's children and grandchildren.
Dr. Helen Kristmanson was the Island's first provincial archaeologist, serving in this role from 2009 until 2021, when she joined the L’nuey team as Senior Archaeologist. L’nuey is an Epekwitk-based initiative focused on protecting and implementing the constitutionally entrenched rights of the PEI Mi'kmaq. Helen is an Institute of Island Studies Executive Committee member at the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú, past president of the Canadian Archaeological Association, and sitting president of the Vinland Society of PEI. Current scholarly research includes an examination of the underrepresentation of historical Mi’kmaq archaeological sites on Epekwitk through collections, archival, and field research. Helen descends from Friðrik August Kristmansson and ElÃn Jonasdottir, first-generation Osland settlers, and Guðmundur Bjornsson and Thorbjorg Guðny Bjornrdottir, also vesturfarars, who settled in southern British Columbia. In her spare time, Helen researches Icelandic and Scottish history.
The lecture is free, and all are welcome.

Department of Modern Languages successfully completed their 7-year cyclical review. Program faculty, students, academic administrators and external reviewers engaged in a thorough assessment of the program’s curriculum, teaching practices, research, service and student experiences. After the site visit and detailed review of the program’s self-study report, the reviewers submitted their recommendations and observations in a report for program’s continual improvement and student success. In response to the reviewers’ report, the program faculty prepared an action plan, which was presented to the Academic Planning and Curriculum Committee (APCC).
"Writing Together: A Year of Meaning-Making and Friendship," a new book by Dr. Darcy Shaw, professor emeritus of small animal internal medicine, Atlantic Veterinary College, ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú, and Dr. Penny Williamson, retired associate professor, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will be launched on Tuesday, October 7, at 7 pm in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building, ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú.
The event, which will be hosted by The Bookmark, is free, and all are welcome.
Dr. Shaw and Dr. Williamson committed to writing together for a year, despite being separated by age, gender, profession, and geography, and "Writing Together" is the result. In the process, they discovered that writing together could be a way to reflect on life, deepen friendship, and create a powerful antidote to loneliness in a time when people are so disconnected. Using poetry as a catalyst for carefully crafted prompts, they created a process for writing in a trustworthy space that anyone could use.
Drawing from their backgrounds in facilitation and leadership development, Dr. Williamson and Dr. Shaw have created more than just a writing guide—they have crafted a lifeline for anyone feeling stuck, seeking renewal, or longing to understand their life’s journey. "Writing Together" is an exploration of connection, vulnerability, and the transformative power of shared storytelling.
