In this presentation, we will explore the importance of creating welcoming classroom environments as outlined in Teaching at Its Best: A Research-Based Resource for College Instructors by Linda B. Nilson.
This presentation will focus on ways of creating a warm, welcoming classroom environment that fosters student participation, motivation to learn, satisfaction with the course, and achievement of course objectives. Much of the practical information suggested by Nilson revolves around planning a welcoming classroom, creating a positive first day of class, developing rapport with and between students, learning students’ names, and creating an inclusive and equitable classroom.​

November is Diabetes Awareness Month; almost 900 people will be diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus on PEI this year. There are more than 15,000 Islanders living with Diabetes now. Diabetes is a chronic condition that results from the body’s inability to produce and/or use insulin sufficiently. In the absence of insulin or sufficient amounts of insulin, blood glucose levels rise and if left can lead to serious health issues.
The ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú Health and Wellness Centre has partnered with the Provincial Diabetes Program and is offering free glucose checks on November 22 from 09:00-11:30 am at the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú Health and Wellness Centre. Come and have a risk assessment completed.
Depending upon the work requirements of University departments, the holiday schedule will be in effect from noon on December 24, 2019 through January 1, 2020, inclusive. Learners assessing learners is a great way to promote active learning and collaboration as well as deeper content understanding. However, it can also pose many problems if it is not introduced properly and monitored correctly. This workshop will cover the basics of peer assessment as well as provide examples of peer assessment tools for face-to-face settings as well as online settings. This workshop takes place on Wednesday, November 27th from 10:30 to 11:30 am in Room 312 of the Robertson Library.
Neal Jamieson, Reactive Health, will discuss Foot Care and how it can affect us if we have poor foot health. He’ll highlight some common foot health issues and treatments, review foot anatomy, discuss proper footwear and discuss foot reflexology. Session is free and no need to pre-register. Robertson Library, WUSC ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú , and the Rotaract Club of ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù·½Èë¿Ú invite you to attend a screening of the documentary The Staging Post.
The film follows Afghan Hazara refugees, Muzafar, Khadim and Tahira. Stranded in Indonesia after Australia 'stopped the boats' and facing many years in limbo, they build a community and start a school which inspires a refugee education revolution. (Kanopy, 2017)
The Staging Post was produced and directed by Australian documentary filmmaker Jolyon Hoff.
The purpose of the film will be to raise money for the Shine A Light Program, an initiative that provides women and girls within refugee camps the opportunity to better their education prospects.
Admission is free, but there will be donations accepted at the door. Any amount can make a difference in someone's life.
