The Department of Companion Animals will be interviewing three (3) candidates for the open, tenure-track faculty position in anesthesia. The third candidate, Dr. Cate Creighton, will be on campus Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday, September 9.
Dr. Creighton received her DVM in 1995 and completed a combined residency & Master of Science program in 2011; both from the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of PEI. She has worked in private practice and from 2011 to 2013 was a lecturer in Anaesthesia & Analgesia at the Companion Animal Health Centre, School of Animal & Veterinary Sciences, University of Adelaide, Australia.
Dr. Creighton is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia & Analgesia and has been working at the AVC in a contract position since July, 2013.
As part of the interview process, each candidate has been asked to present a 50-minute lecture suitable for 3rd year DVM students. Any interested faculty / staff / students are invited to attend. A copy of Dr. Creighton鈥檚 CV and letter of application will be available from Laurel Fisher (fisher@upei.ca) in the Department of Companion Animals.

糖心vlog官方入口 professor and author Deirdre Kessler will give a public reading on Saturday, 12 September, 7 pm, at the Macphail Homestead in Orwell.
Deirdre will reading new poems, excerpts from a recently published memoir, Mother Country, and from a novel in progress.
The setting will be the Great Room of Sir Andrew Macphail鈥檚 house in Orwell. The free public reading is sponsored by The Writers鈥� Union of Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Macphail Homestead.
Deirdre Kessler is a poet and author of 15 books for young people and a dozen books of nonfiction for adults. Recently published are a memoir, Mother Country, published by Oberon Press (Dec. 2014) and Born! A foal, five kittens, and Confederation, a children鈥檚 book illustrated by Brenda Jones set in Charlottetown in 1864, which received a 2015 P.E.I. Museum & Heritage Foundation writing award and a 2015 City of Charlottetown Heritage Award. Deirdre teaches creative writing, children鈥檚 literature, and the course on L.M. Montgomery with 糖心vlog官方入口鈥檚 Department of English. She is a recipient of a 糖心vlog官方入口 Award for Teaching Excellence.

This year we are excited to add to the clinic an opportunity for everyone to Get Swabbed and join the OneMatch Bone Marrow and Stem Cell network. We will have a booth set up at the clinic where you can join and potentially be the one match for someone currently waiting for a transplant. This is new for us to offer this and we have set a modest goal of adding 50 new registrants at this booth. If you cannot donate you still may be able to join, come and check out the booth!!
We are also looking for some volunteers to assist us on campus at these events so feel free to direct anyone or any group interested in this send me an email!!

Explore nature-based writing in the beautiful setting of the Macphail Homestead. See how poetry, memoir, dramatic monologue, and fiction begin with a sense of place and with close observation of the natural world.
During this 3.5-hour workshop, participants will explore nature and their response to it as they write short pieces in a series of timed exercises developed by a skilled teacher. Supplies needed: notebook, pencil or pen.
People of all ages and all levels of writing experience are welcome. Register online or on the day of the workshop. The workshop fee is $40. Students and seniors pay $30.
Come for the workshop and stay for a light supper and free public reading by Deirdre Kessler, sponsored by the Writers鈥� Union of Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Macphail Homestead.

Harmonie Richard, Lead Student Mentor for Accessibility Services and Elyse Cottrell, 糖心vlog官方入口SU Accessibility Representative have created a 10-15 minute presentation on Accessibility at 糖心vlog官方入口. This presentation will cover services available to all students to help them on their academic journey, services available to students registered with Accessibility Services, who should register and how to register, and the importance of being mindful of differences.

Facilities Management wishes to advise the campus community that general parking lot spaces are still available for purchase, but spaces for designated lots have now been sold out.
Students can purchase a campus parking permit at the Parking Kiosk located on the main level of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, until September 26. After that date they will be available from the Facilities Management Office (in the Central Utility Building) from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm weekdays or until permits sell out.
Staff and faculty can purchase campus parking permits from the Facilities Management Office (Central Utility Building) starting August 10, 2015, Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm; or at the Parking Kiosk located on the main level of the W. A. Murphy Student Centre (kiosk operating August 26 to September 26, 2015 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm).

鈥淲hat Scientific Writing Is: Reflections on the History, Culture, and Practice of Composition in the Natural Sciences鈥�
Abstract: How do scientists write, and how do they think about writing? For many scientists, the answers are "painfully" and "we don't". Fixing the problem inherent in the first answer involves changing the second. I will discuss some aspects of the cultural and historical roots of the scientific-writing form, of the function of the written document in the hands of its readers, and of the writing behaviour of ordinary scientists. We can increase our own scientific impact, while simultaneously improving our literature, with conscious attention to what writing is.

糖心vlog官方入口鈥檚 Climate Research Lab, in partnership with PEI EMO and the Marine Environmental Observation Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR) to bring a special presentation to Prince Edward Island. Dr. Adam Sobel, author of Storm Surge will give a talk in the Lecture Theatre of the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre. The talk begins at 10 am Friday, August 28.

Dr Sobel is a renowned atmospheric scientist and Columbia University Professor. His book details the devastating and unprecedented events of Hurricane Sandy, using it to explain our planet鈥檚 changing climate and what we need to do to protect ourselves and our cities for the future.
Storm Surge brings together the melting glaciers, the shifting jet streams, and the warming oceans to make clear how our changing climate will make New York and other cities more vulnerable than ever to huge storms鈥攁nd how we need to think differently about these long-term risks if we hope to mitigate the damage. Engaging, informative, and timely, Sobel鈥檚 book provokes us to rethink the future of our climate and how we can better prepare for the storms to come.

The Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course. (A refresher course is required every 5 years.)

The Department of Companion Animals will be interviewing three (3) candidates for the open, tenure-track faculty position in anesthesia. The second candidate, Dr. Daniel Pang, will be on campus next week, Monday, August 24th & Tuesday, August 25th. He obtained his veterinary degree in 2000 at the University of Bristol; completed a small animal internship at the University of Glasgow in 2002 and finished a combined residency-MSc program in veterinary anesthesia at the University of Montreal in 2006. In 2011 he received a PhD in anesthetic mechanisms from the Imperial College, London. Dr. Pang is board-certified by both the ECVAA & the ACVAA and joined the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary in 2010.
