This session is required for those who attended the Basic Biosafety course in 2013 or earlier. It is not a substitute for Basic Biosafety. Topics to be covered include a review of basic biosafety principles, a practical approach to spill cleanup, and an update on what鈥檚 new at 糖心vlog官方入口 in the field of biosafety.

To attend the Biosafety Refresher course, you must pre-register by contacting Angela Deighan, Research Services and Graduate Studies, before May 6, 2016 by email (adeighan@upei.ca) or by phone (902-628-4308). Please note: those who have not attended a training session since 2013 are currently due for the Biosafety Refresher Course.

 This session is aimed at students working in and around containment labs for the summer.  (It does not qualify as required biosafety training for AVC graduate students.)

Topics to be covered include biosafety and biosecurity principles and what is required to  work in biohazard containment labs.

SCENT, the FDO, and the 糖心vlog官方入口FA are pleased to host Dr. Len Findlay from the University of Saskatchewan on Wednesday, April 27, at 糖心vlog官方入口, as the culmination of SCENT and the FDO鈥檚 semester-long focus on academic freedom, pedagogy, and curriculum. Dr. Findlay will give a public lecture entitled 鈥淧edagogical Authority of Consumer Sovereignty? Academic Freedom and the Academic Mission鈥 at 11:00am in MCDH 243. Free, everyone welcome. 

The morning talk will be followed by a more intensive afternoon workshop, from 1:00-3:00, in MCDH 329. Dr. Findlay will lead participants through a discussion of many issues surrounding academic freedom, pedagogy, and curriculum, organized around three broad themes: 1) content; 2) delivery, and 3) ethics (see for more information on some of what these themes entail). 

Please preregister for lunch (provided, at 12:30) and the workshop by the end of the day, Wednesday, April 20, so we can order enough food for participants: contact Gerald at fdo@upei.ca

Graduates: All graduates are required to rent and wear a gown and hood to their Convocation ceremony on May 7, 2016. Graduating students will need to order their gown and hood online on the Gaspard website, by Monday, April 25, 2016. Students must order by this date to guarantee that a gown and hood will be available for them on Convocation Day.

The cost to rent convocation regalia is $25.00 + taxes (or $30 onsite). Prepaid regalia can be picked up on Friday, May 6 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and on Saturday, May 7 starting at 8:00 am at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, room 114 upon presentation of a 糖心vlog官方入口 ID and the Gaspard online confirmation form. Regalia must be returned an hour and a half following each ceremony.

The Senate Committee on the Enhancement of Teaching (SCENT), the Faculty Development Office (FDO), and the 糖心vlog官方入口 Faculty Association (糖心vlog官方入口FA) invite all members of the campus community to participate in a workshop facilitated by Dr. Len Findlay of the University of Saskatchewan from 1:00-3:00 on Wednesday, April 27th. The workshop, which will explore issues of academic freedom, pedagogy, and curriculum around three broad themes, will follow Dr. Findlay's morning talk (11:00, MCDH 243). The workshop (in MCDH 329) will be preceded by lunch at 12:30; both lunch and the workshop, like the lecture, are free of charge. So that we can order sufficient food and plan for the workshop, we ask that you register with Gerald at fdo@upei.ca by Wednesday, April 20.

April 16, 2016 is World Voice Day. More than 500 events around the world are drawing attention to the importance of the speaking and singing voice in everyday life.

Advancing Interdisciplinary Research in Singing (AIRS) 糖心vlog官方入口 World Voice Day Celebration, 4:00 pm 

The first event is a series of short talks on research on the singing voice, followed by a short concert from members of the 糖心vlog官方入口 Multicultural Choir and Song Circle. This is all under the auspices of the AIRS project, supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Dr. Annabel Cohen, professor of psychology and the director of AIRS, will give a brief overview of the scope of AIRS research which has been ongoing for 7 years in PEI, across Canada, and in over a dozen countries world. Three of Dr. Cohen鈥檚 honours undergraduate students will also present. Jessica McKellar will talk on the recognition of popular music by members of three generations: university students, their parents and grandparents. Kyle Dutton and Eric DeSilva鈥檚 topic focuses on their study on a singing test (AIRS Test Battery of Singing Skills) completed by 40 糖心vlog官方入口 student athletes. Following these presentations, members of the AIRS Multicultural Choir and Song Circle will sing songs from Britain, Japan, China, Kenya, and Ukraine, and will lead a few traditional rounds of singing for those who would like to join in.

The event is in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge at 4:00 pm. A light pizza dinner will be provided to enable attendees to stay on campus and attend the 

Dr. Kathy Ling, AVC Community Practice Clinic, will give a public workshop on Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m., about basic first aid for pets. The workshop will take place in AVC Lecture Theatre A.

Dr. Ling will provide basic information on how to recognize and care for emergencies and injuries in dogs and cats. Topics will include primary assessment, handling an injured pet, bleeding, shock, common toxins, and recognizing signs of pain and distress.

This workshop was originally scheduled to take place in March but had to be cancelled due to bad weather.

Ethics protocols that involve 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥 must be reviewed by the full 糖心vlog官方入口 Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday May 6 2016. They will be reviewed at the May meeting. Protocols involving 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥 that are received after May 6 will be reviewed at the June meeting. 

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

This will be a 3 hour training session with handouts, based on CCAC Recommended Syllabus (exam included).                                                                                                                       

The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course.  (A refresher course is required every 5 years.)
