Are You Prepared for an Emergency? --presented by Cindy MacDougall, Emergency Management Coordinator, 12:05鈥�12:55 pm, KMB 211

If an emergency happens, it may take emergency workers some time to reach you. Could you look after yourself and your family for three days if no services were available and emergency responders couldn鈥檛 get to you? Emergencies may be beyond our control, but we can reduce the risk and the impact of them. There are three simple steps everyone can take to become better prepared to face emergencies: know the risks; make a plan; get an emergency kit.

Floor/Area Warden Training --presented by Mark Pharand, Manager of Security Services, 3:00鈥�4:00 pm, ICC 104

Are you a floor or area warden for your building? Do you know what to do if there is a building evacuation? Do you have questions about your role as a warden or the evacuation procedures for your building? This session will review 糖心vlog官方入口鈥檚 building evacuation procedures and the roles of building plan administrator, floor/area warden, and guardian.

Ethics protocols that involve 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥� must be reviewed by the full 糖心vlog官方入口 Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday November 3, 2017. They will be reviewed at the November meeting. Protocols involving 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥� that are received after November 3 will be reviewed at the December 2017 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥�, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

There will be a 糖心vlog官方入口 Basic Biosafety training session on Thursday, November 2, 2017, 1:00 - 4:30 pm inrRoom 287N, AVC.

Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the 糖心vlog官方入口, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to the full campus community including graduate students. Please note: those who have not attended a training session since 2014 are currently due for the
Biosafety Refresher Course which will be held at a later date.

To attend the Basic Biosafety course, you must pre-register by contacting Kathryn Harrison, before October 30, 2017, by email (kharrison@upei.ca) or by phone (902-566- 0901). Please provide your name, department, your supervisor鈥檚 name (if applicable), email address and phone number in your email or voice message. Please indicate if you are a graduate student.

The annual Chili Lunch, during the examination period, will be served to students on December 6 and 7 in the Chaplaincy Centre. With Rocky Paquet's passing, help is needed to re-think the preparation of a meal that feeds over 700 students. Each semester 30-35 staff and faculty members volunteer to set up, serve and clean up. This year, more help will be needed to ensure the success of the annual Chili Lunch.

With input from the campus community, decisions will be made as to how this tradition can continue to thrive. Please bring your ideas to a think-tank meeting hosted by Sister Sue Kidd on Wednesday, October 25 at 4:00 pm in the Chaplaincy Centre. If you are unable to attend, please submit your suggestions via email to sukidd@upei.ca.

MacLean Construction Ltd has been awarded the contract for the Dalton Hall Renovations Project. Construction is expected to begin Monday, October 23, 2017 and is expected to be complete in the summer of 2018. During this time there will be noise and possibly some vibrations. This area will be fenced and considered a construction zone. The project will focus on substantial interior fit up, including ventilation, cooling systems, plumbing, electrical and architectural systems, along with exterior upgrades.

While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we proceed with this renovation project that will enhance the facility.

Jason Saggo will be leading a new kickboxing program at the Sports Centre which will be a high-energy, focused, martial arts based workout. Build stamina, improve coordination and flexibility and burn calories as you build lean muscle with this fun and challenging workout.

The program will run November 2 - 23 on Thursdays from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm in Fitness Studio 1, at the Chi Wan Young Sports Centre. The Fee for full-time 糖心vlog官方入口 students and sports centre members is $24 + hst; the fee for non-members is $30 + hst. To qualify for a carpooling-parking permit, students must be registered full-time, and faculty/staff must be full-time employees. In each carpool there must be a minimum of three participants, each with their own registered vehicle that currently has a valid 糖心vlog官方入口 parking permit.

Professor Anne Warner La Forest, of the University of New Brunswick鈥檚 Faculty of Law, will present the 2017 Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law on Friday, October 20, at 1:30 pm, in The Guild, Charlottetown. Her presentation is entitled 鈥淐anada and International Human Rights Law at 150: A Journey in Three Parts.鈥� Co-sponsored by the 糖心vlog官方入口 and the Law Foundation of Prince Edward Island, the Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law honours Thane A. Campbell, Rhodes Scholar, former premier of Prince Edward Island, and first chancellor of the 糖心vlog官方入口.

In 1993, Mi'kmaw Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy and then-Nova Scotia premier John Savage declared October as the official month to recognize and celebrate Mi'kmaw culture and heritage. Since then, Mi'kmaq History Month is celebrated in all areas of Mi鈥檏ma鈥檏i (the Mi鈥檏maq homeland that includes present-day Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, central and eastern New Brunswick, the Gaspe Peninsula, and Newfoundland).  糖心vlog官方入口 has raised the Grand Council Flag of the Mi'kmaq Nation in honour of Mi'kmaq History Month. On Wednesday, November 1 at 1:30 in McDougall Hall room 242, Bruce Rainnie, 糖心vlog官方入口's Applied Communication, Leadership, and Cultural Practitioner, will be giving a special "TED Talk" style presentation as part of Atlantic Canada Career Week.

Please join us for a very special presentation by a distinguished visitor from the University of Malta, Dr. Josef Trapani. Dr. Trapani holds Bachelor鈥檚 and Master鈥檚 degrees from the University of Malta and a PhD from the University of Brighton. He is Lecturer in the University of Malta鈥檚 Faculty of Health Sciences and is the International Coordinator for that university鈥檚 Department of Nursing. His main academic interests include critical care nursing, clinical decision making, evidence-based practice, e-learning, health promotion, qualitative research methodologies, and Maltese linguistics.

Today, Thursday, October 19, Dr. Trapani will speak about 鈥淩eferring inCritical Care: Nurses as Dual Agents鈥�. Research indicates that one of the most frequent nursing decisions is that of seeking help from medical, nursing, or other health care practitioners; yet, there is very limited research around the factors related to, and the actual process of, such referring. Dr. Trapani鈥檚 study sought to address this research gap by exploring the factors associated with critical care nurses鈥� decisions to seek help from doctors, and to explain the process of referral in the context of an intensive care unit by means of a substantive theory derived from the data.

The presentation will take place from 2:00-3:00 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge. All are welcome!
