Finding the Right Blend: Stories and Advice about Combining Face-to-Face and Online Learning Modalities
Blended learning combines online and in-person learning practices. However, with all the learning tech advances, it can be difficult to know where to start or even if a blended learning environment is the right way to go. The E-Learning Office and the Faculty Development Office have assembled an excellent group of individuals from across 糖心vlog官方入口 to discuss the use of blended learning. The panelists include
H. Carolyn Peach Brown - Director, Environmental Studies; Associate Professor, Faculty of Science.
Andrew Carrothers - Assistant Professor, Faculty of Business.
Marva Sweeney-Nixon - Professor, Faculty of Science; Chair of Biology Department.
Nicole Wadden-Garland - Accessibility Services Coordinator.
Gerald Wandio - FDO Program Coordinator; Sessional Instructor, Faculty of Arts.
Hayden Woodley - Assistant Professor, Management; Academic Director, Business Co-op Program.
The panel discussion will take place on Thursday, October 11th, 2018 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in AVC 201N. (Note: this is Lecture Theatre A, right across from the AVC cafeteria.) A light lunch will be served, so come a bit early!
Games are compelling for young and old alike. Adding game elements to your course is one way of enhancing your students' engagement. This workshop, offered by the E-Learning Office, will take place on two separate dates: 10:30 to 11:30 am on Tuesday, October 23rd or Monday, November 19th in Room 265 of the Robertson Library.

The Island Lecture Series kicks off another season on Tuesday, October 16, at 7 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the 糖心vlog官方入口 campus, and will feature Ms. Janice Pettit speaking about her master鈥檚 research: 鈥淚s the 鈥業sland way of life鈥 lost when the ferry becomes a bridge?鈥
Politicians began talking about building a fixed link between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick in the late 1980s, and while this was not the first time the topic was broached, the Premier of the day suggested a plebiscite vote to determine Islanders鈥 interest. Both those opposed and those in favour of the link rallied their two sides at public meetings prior to the vote to ensure their messages were heard. The 鈥渘o鈥 side raised a number of issues, but their main concern centred on the perceived loss of the 鈥淚sland way of life鈥 if a fixed link connected the Island to the mainland. During the 1989 plebiscite, Islanders voted almost 60 per cent in favour of a fixed crossing, and in 1997 the Confederation Bridge opened to the public.
Given all that was said and written regarding concerns about the loss of islandness, it is somewhat surprising that, until now, research had not been conducted to determine if the bridge has, in fact, had this impact. Have Prince Edward Islanders lost their 鈥淚sland way of life鈥? This presentation, drawn from the exploratory thesis research of a 糖心vlog官方入口 Master of Arts in Island Studies (MAIS) graduate, provides some insight into whether Prince Edward Island residents still consider themselves islanders and if their island identity has been affected by the fixed connection to the mainland.
Janice Pettit graduated from the MAIS program in May 2018 and is a Senior Policy Advisor with the Government of Prince Edward Island.
Admission to the lecture is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
The next lecture is scheduled for November 20. Mark your calendars!
