ACENET will be teaching an online research computing bootcamp. This workshop is normally done in-person over two days, but is being converted to an online format that will take place over four afternoons, as follows:

  • 27 April, 12:30-5:00pm Atlantic
  • 29 April, 1:00-5:00pm Atlantic
  •   4 May, 1:00-5:00pm Atlantic
  •   6 May, 1:00-5:00pm Atlantic

Using  materials, the series will introduce you to the Unix Shell, Version Control with Git, and Python. It will be hands-on and cover the fundamentals of Python, including data types, conditional statements, loops and functions, as well as program design, version control, data management, and task automation.

Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. The goal is to teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging and using Python in everyday tasks.

The course is aimed at faculty, researchers, students and industry doing R&D. Previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop is not required. You do need to have a laptop/desktop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages. As this is an online workshop, it would also be useful to have a headset and extra monitor set up for a dual screen option.

A branching scenario is online interactive learning content. It focuses on decision making, a skill that everyone of us has to do well in a variety of ways on a daily basis. A branching scenario begins with some sort of context-specific story with a problem to solve. The learner is given choices and is asked to make one. Each choice has a consequence which is the feedback that helps the learner to understand the value of the decision made. Each consequence produces new challenges and more choices. The result is that learners can practice making decisions and develop skills in a low-stakes environment. Branching scenarios are good lead-ups to clinics or simulations that prepare learners for real-world experiences they will have to face. Facilitated by the E-Learning Office, this webinar will be offered on Wednesday, May 6th from 2 to 3 pm.

BlackBoard Collaborate is web conferencing software that allows instructors to do many things to engage with their students. Facilitated by the E-Learning Office, this workshop, delivered online, will take place on Wednesday, April 29th from 2-3 pm and again on Wednesday, June 3rd from 10:30 to 11:30 am.
